Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
"They said he could VOTE when he was at home. Well, that let me out. Thinks I, what is the country a-coming to? It was 'lection day, and I was just about to go and vote myself if I warn't too drunk to get there; but when they told me there was a State in this country where they'd let that nigger vote, I drawed out" (Twain 40).
Pap was ranting about how much he hated the government and showing classic racism towards black people. Then, Pap talks about a black man voting. During the time the book was written, black were slaves and had no way to vote or be a professor. This was Mark Twain referring to the Gilded Age, and how some whites were not ok with blacks having a say in the government. This has to do with the government because they passed the law to let blacks vote, but the public were retaliating against it.

"Looky here, Jim; does a cat talk like we do?" (103).
This was the conversation where Jim and Huck are discussing whether or not french people show be speaking English. Jim is surprised to find out that people around the world speak different languages. Huck is trying to tell them that all people are different, but Jim is saying people are people and are all the same. It is trying to tell people that blacks and whites are different on the outside, but are all people. Why should one type of person be treated like lesser beings? This connects to the government because during the Gilded Age, Jim Crow laws were created to keep blacks and whites separate. People are all people, so why should they have to ride different train carts or drink from separate water fountains.

"But you take a man dat's got 'bout five million chillen runnin' roun' de house, en it's diffunt."(102)
Jim and Huck were discussing the tale of Solomon, and about how many children he had. Earlier in the conversation, he made a reference to think of the child as a dollar. If we continue to do this, Jim is really talking about how is someone has a large amount of money, they do not value one or two dollars like someone who is constantly scraping for cash. This has to do with my topic because the government would favor the rich, and would pass laws to make sure they woud stay rich. Companies would also treat their workers horribly, with unsafe places to work and very little pay. People with a lot of money could not understand the poor's troubles.

"I should reckoned the difference in rank would a sejested to you that a corn-shuck bed warn't just fitten for me to sleep on. Your Grace 'll take the suck bed yourself." (162)
The Duke and the King thought of themselves as better than Huck and Jim, and in this quote they are telling Huck that because of their status, they deserve the bed that is most comfortable. Really, all these men are just low life con artist that are taking advantage of Huck and Jim. I feel that this has to do with the government because the rich felt that they were more entitled than the rest of America and treated them like dirt. The government let that happen with their hands off policy, and even stole from the public themselves with the Tammy Hall incident.
